"Universal Struggle" -- Nathanial Bustion

Continuing with our Black/Brown Dialogues:

“Lives at the Intersection”

Melly Barragan · Nathaniel Bustion · Pamela Davis · Jan Jackson ·
Jacobo Ramirez · Oscar Sanabria

Curated by Dr. Gerda Govine Ituarte, Ed.D.

Opening Night Reception: Saturday, August 9, 2008 from 7-10 pm

The Avenue 50 Studio is proud to present “Lives at the Intersection,”

an exhibit featuring multi-media works of art by six Los Angeles artists.

The works are as diverse as the artists. Many of us live at the
intersection of bi-racial, bi-cultural, intra-cultural and immigrant realities.
Black/Brown relationships are stretched across a racialized domestic
and international landscape sprinkled with preconceived stereotypes.
Our exhibit focuses on a “value added” (strength and benefit)
perspective regarding the spaces created at that intersection.

Each artist created a space for conscious dialogue exploring

commonalities and possibilities. They capture moments shaped by

their experiences and truth, and invite the audience to consider the
multi-faceted opportunities.

Mely Barragán is one of the best contemporary artists in Mexico whose
multi-media work has been exhibited in shows throughout Europe,
Mexico, the U.S.: New York, Pasadena, San Diego; and Tijuana.
Selected sites include the San Diego Museum, Galeria H&H,
Cornerhouse and Bronx River Art Center. Her work is original and

creates thought-evoking, spirited and diverse dialogue. Mely tackles

women’s issues and even the street mechanics’ Muffler men from

Tijuana. She will create numerous installations for “Living at the
Intersection.”

Nathaniel Bustion is a painter, sculptor, educator, philosopher and
poet. His work is universal and stretches across Africa, Asia, Europe,
South America and North America. The images he creates are

extraordinary and holds your attention and takes your breath away.

Nathaniel is considered perhaps one of the most gifted African

American artists who continue to create visions that transcend time

and place touching one’s spirit and senses again and again.

Pamela Davis, photographer, was born and raised in East Los
Angeles. She exhibited at Pomona’s Millard Sheets Gallery, Pasadena

Art Walk, and One Colorado. She attended Cal Arts and, Otis Art

Institute. Pamela was awarded Honorable Mention in the

2004 International Photography Awards. Her photographs are beautiful

and illuminates everyday sightings. Pamela’s work" is a gift for viewers

to behold and leads to endless discovery.

Jan L. Jackson is owner of Captured on Canvas Portrait and Design
Studio. She is a multi-media artist who prefers creating portraits

working with oils. Expressing movement and capturing “moments”

is the heart of her creations. Jan produces a range of images from

women with flowing white summer dresses on the beach, weddings,

and family togetherness. Jan created artwork for “Lives at the

Intersection.”

Jacobo Ramirez is an emerging artist who creates artwork using

multi-media, woodcut, photography, acrylic, drawings, installation to

make space for discourse across diverse peoplescapes and

landscapes focused on solutions and different ways of being. His work

is grounded in observations and experiences growing up in South Gate

and attending UCLA. He exhibited his work in group shows in Los

Angeles. Jacobo is producing some original artwork for “Living at
the Intersection.”

Oscar Sanabria is a long-time East Los Angeles resident and

descendent of Guatemala. He exhibited locally and internationally at

Tropico de Nopal, Pharmaka, San Francisco Art Institute, Self-Help

Graphics and in Japan. He grew up and experienced diversity

first-hand and was intrigued by the “other.” The theme of identity is

woven throughout Oscar’s work which is dramatic and thoughtful. And,

at the same time, his work startles and welcomes.

Join us as we journey to and through “Lives at the Intersection.”

José Vera Fine Art and Antiques

David Flury and Miguel Felipe Exhibition

José Vera Fine Art & Antiques is pleased to
present an exhibition featuring artwork by
established Chicano artist David Flury and
emerging artist Miguel Felipe.
Dates: Saturday, August 9th to Friday, September 5th.
Opening Reception: Saturday, August 9th,
6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. (the night of the NELA
Second Saturday ArtWalk)

About David Flury
Chicano artist David Flury enjoys the distinction
of being a second-generation member of the
legendary "Los Four" collective, whose original
members were Frank Romero, Gilbert "Magu" Lujan,
Roberto de la Rocha, and Carlos Almaraz. Flury
studied fine art at college, and then apprenticed
under famed artists Margaret Garcia and Frank
Romero. Flury's work is currently showing in the
"Los Angelenos" exhibit at Los Angeles County
Museum. His artwork has been part of many
galleries and museum exhibitions, including,
Strangers in Our Own Land at the Latino Museum,
Claremont and Day of the Dead at the Los Angeles
County Museum of Art. He has also exhibited at
Patricia Correia Gallery in Santa Monica. Flury
traveled in 2007 with other top-tier Los Angeles
artists to participate in Pintores de Aztlan at
La Casa Encendida in Madrid, Spain.

Flury blends representational forms with abstract
compositions. He creates a stunning build up of
lines, forms, and layers using strong,
expressionistic colors. His subject matter focuses
on his surroundings and the human social condition.
He brilliantly depicts pathos and humor in scenes
from everyday life. Much in his works suggest the
absurdly fast pace and chaos associated with everyday
city living
.

About Miguel Felipe
Miguel Felipe was raised in Mexico, his mother's
country of origin; Spain, his father's home country;
and in the United States. The themes in Felipe's
works reflect his life experience, including the
varied cultures within which he has lived and his
ongoing search for wisdom and balance. He is a
precise colorist who produces well-formed and
balanced compositions. For example, Felipe deftly
depicts the high spirit of flamenco in some works.
In "Un Flamenco," we are treated to the vision of
a sole flamenco dancer whose dress extends into
massive, voluptuous crimson flowers. The light is
brilliant. Suggestions of spirituality appear in
the background. In his self portrait, Felipe employs
soothing pastels to depict a beckoning composition
that includes wine, flowers, guitar music, and
fascinating shapes. In brief, Felipe presents a
diverse visual feast.

Felipe has exhibited at the Vincent Price Gallery,
the Soka Gakkai International Festival, Bohemia
Books, the Office of the City Attorney of Los Angeles,
Sabor Y Cultura Café, the Academy of Technology and
Entertainment, El Portal, Barnsdall Art Center,
Teatro Frida Kahlo, and the Friendship Center, all
in greater Los Angeles. He has also exhibited at galleries
in Albuquerque, NM and San Antonio, TX.

Free Children's Hands On Art Event, Saturday, 8/23:
From 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Miguel Felipe will supervise children in painting a
mural. All children and parents are welcome to
participate! We are providing all necessary materials.

Kristi Engle Gallery

Art Exhibition: Cindy Stelmackowich's “Embalmination“
August 23 - September 27, 2008
Reception: Saturday, August 23rd, 7-10pm
Artist Talk: Sunday, August 24th, 2pm

Gallery hours: Thursday - Saturday 12 - 6pm & by appointment

Kristi Engle Gallery is pleased to open its 2008-09 season with the work of

Canadian artist, Cindy Stelmackowich.

While working towards a PhD in art history, Stelmackowich’s research in

Canadian and European medical archives brought her to study various 19th

century anatomical atlases. The illustrations within these texts presented

Stelmackowich with a body of compelling images which have become the

springboard to her current work.

Using a digital camera to record atlas pages, Stelmackowich manipulates

medical illustrations through a process of digital collage. She then imposes

on these scientific works a series of quite different images - colored glass

vessels, illustrations of 19th " century disasters and Victorian black lace. In

doing so, Stelmackowich examines ambiguities embedded within the genre
of scientific illustrations and repositions them within a symbolic order and

allegorical setting. Stelmackowich deploys these 19th century texts in a way

that conveys the burgeoning fascination with and understanding of medical

science that coincided with the development of ethical standards by these
early medical scientists and schools. While grave robbing and the use of

prisoners’ bodies were prevalent ways of obtaining the cadavers needed,

these medical llustrations frequently include the head, hair and face of the

cadaver depicted in a sympathetic fashion looking almost as if alive.

Running against the modern convention of dehumanizing the medical

subject as an object of dissection, these 19th century representations often

have ecstatic or angelic expressions.

Stelmackowich augments these humanist illustrations with images of richly

colored art glass vessels that evoke the notion of a missing life/soul from the

empty human vessel on display. Combining images of bodies with those of

destruction, Stelmackowich’s “Disaster Series“ employs illustrations of

historic events, connecting the fragility of the human body with the violence

of nature (and sometimes “man“) against “man“. Etchings intended as

objective journalistic accounts of ships destroyed by storm or building
consumed by fire are digitally blended with medical illustrations, connecting

the event with the body and through this gesture forcing an internalization

of history. The Victorian Era mourning costume, made famous by Queen

Victoria herself, included elaborately designed black lace that trimmed hats,

hems sleeves & petticoats. In her most recent series, Stelmackowich uses

lace to both ironically mourn these bodies for whom many most likely were

not “officially“ mourned as well as emphasize the mannered aesthetic

features of the work which suggests both the vulnerability of their subjects

and an appeal to the emotional empathy within their intended audience.

This exhibition follows Stelmackowich’s continuing interest in the historical

connections between fine arts and the medical sciences. Her work brings to

light the depth of culture within science, conflating two traditionally distinct

worlds while revealing, somehow, the soft core of hard science to chilling

effect.

Cindy Stelmackowich’s work has been exhibited throughout Canada and

has been collected by the Ottawa Art Gallery, York University, the Canadian

Council Art Bank and the National Gallery of Canada. She's been the

recipient of many grants from the Canada Arts Council and others.

Stelmackowich teaches at Carleton University in Ottawa and has lectured

on the topic of art and science throughout Canada and the United States.

Kristi Engle Gallery devotes itself primarily to solo exhibitions of new works
by contemporary artists.

It is located in Highland Park, near the corner of Ave. 50 and York Blvd.

Monte Vista

Arnoldo Vargas
Welcome Wilmington

August 16–September 17, 2008

Opening reception: Saturday, August 16, 7–10 PM

Monte Vista is excited to present our next exhibition, Welcome Wilmington,
featuring the photography of Arnoldo Vargas.

Wilmington California is synonymous with Industry. Home to more oil
refineries than any other US city and gateway to the third largest port in
the world, Wilmington is also synonymous with skyrocketing levels of
pollution, cancer, asthma, and other ill effects of industry. “Welcome
Wilmington” is a photographic exhibition by Arnoldo Vargas chronicling not
only the glare of Wilmington’s oil refineries but also the complex
political relationship with the thriving community who live within it.
Documenting altars of victims of police shootings or participants in this
year’s Peace and Dignity Run, Vargas examines the ways various instances
of spiritual reflection continue to manifest within this structure.

Arnoldo Vargas received his BA from UCLA in fine art in 1999 and will be
attending Calarts for his MFA in the fall. He has exhibited through out
California, with his most recent exhibition “Stardust” at Space 47 in San
Jose. He is a native of Wilmington, California, where he currently
teaches art at Banning High School.

The exhibition opens at Monte Vista (5442 Monte Vista St., Los Angeles, CA
90042) on August 16, from 7 to 10 pm, and will be on view through
September 17, 2008. Gallery hours are Saturday and Sunday, 12 to 5pm.

Deborah and Catherine Davis- Relate to Surrounding Areas in Color
August 9 through September 9, 2008
Opening Reception: August 9, 7pm to 10pm

MorYork Gallery presents new fabric & paper collage works by artists

Deborah and Catherine Davis. Relate is the culmination of a six month
collaboration by this mother-daughter artistic team. Their work began in
a shared notebook and developed gradually as designs and colors were
translated from paper to fabric and sometimes back again. The title of the
show refers to one in a series of many visual and tactile decisions both
artists made as they mailed pieces back and forth. There are no set rules-
their process and resulting collages are about engaging creativity and
responding playfully and thoughtfully to what the other is doing.

Deborah is a graphic designer, photographer and quilter. She lives high in
the mountains outside Boulder, Co. Catherine is moving to Long Beach, Ca
in the fall to make art at CSULB using more paper. Monkey is their cat who
helped by chewing on tape and string.
